Conference “Professional Musician – here and now”
Samenvatting
Musicians in the 21st century – changing perspectives.
Keynote to be held in Krakow, december 2014 I would like to take the opportunity to talk about the changes and innovations in the music profession in Europe which are faced by our students and graduates and about new developments in the music careers. I will address the question what this means for musicians in terms of what their changing needs are and then we will see how conservatoires in Europe respond to this. I will then go into the various roles that musicians have within their changing career patterns and profession and give an example through describing a new emerging career type, that of the (performing and educating) musician who is engaged with new audiences in various social contexts, in other venues than the traditional concert venues. That will be followed by an exploration of the joint master programme New Audiences and Innovative Practice which we have developed with a number of music academies in Europe and the USA and in which this particular type of musician and practice are central. I will then close this address by exploring the interconnection of performing and educational roles of today’s musicians, how these inform each other and how that can lead to strengthening of musicians’ learning processes. And lastly I will address the question what these developments mean for curricula in the conservatoire.
