Samenvatting

The research focuses on creating a possible technique which would allow a 2D character to interact with the 3D light while preserving the 2D aspect of it.
I researched on EbSynth (style-transferring tool) and Blender as possible software which could help me create the new lighting approach. Normal maps became the key element which allowed a 2D character to receive light and be affected by it. All the maps and masks of the character 's final animation were produced in After Effects, while the lighting pipeline was achieved in Blender. EbSynth was used in the later production phase to create the character 's animated normal map.
As final result - a 20 second animation was made showing a 2D character interacting with the 3D light in a 3D space. Despite being successful, in order to fully incorporate this new technique within a company 's pipeline, a more in-depth experimentation phase is needed. Further research could focus on the lighting set-up and the company 's current pieline behaviour on a "compatibility" level.
