Samenvatting

In this research is examined why the elderly who are involved in “Driezorg” are motivated to be part of the moving groups. To research this, a BREQ-2 questionnaire was used. This questionnaire sounds out the motivation with regard to physical exercise. The BREQ-2 consist of 19 items which are related to the five types of behaviouristic regulation of the self-determination theory. In total, 34 people above the age of 65 took part in this research.

The theoretical side of this research mainly examined the self-determination theory. This theory focuses on the quality of motivation in two different ways. Firstly, this happens by indicating that the content of the goal can differ (intrinsic versus extrinsic). Secondly, under influence of the social context, the reason for striving a certain goal van vary: one wants to do it or has to do it (autonomous versus controlled).

The results of this research show that the elderly who take part in the moving group are autonomously motivated. This kind of motivation offers the best chance of a long-term participation to the moving groups, because the participation is something the people have initiated themselves. In the recommendation one can read how the autonomous motivation can be stimulated during the moving groups and how the non-participators can be summoned to take part in the moving group.
