Samenvatting

BACKGROUND Patients experience a difference in the structure provided by the Dutch Asthma centre Davos (Nederlands Astmacentrum Davos; NAD) and the structure of their own environment in the Netherlands. They therefore find it difficult to transfer the 'new' behavior patterns and the knowledge they gained at the psychomotor therapy of the NAD to their home environment. Keeping a diary could contribute to this transfer by giving structure to the activities, events, thoughts and feelings the patients need to remember.
PURPOSE To investigate in what way a personal diary of therapy sessions could contribute to the knowledge transfer process of patients from the NAD when implicating their therapeutic knowledge at home.
METHOD The method used in this bachelor thesis is called an inventory literature study. In addition to this method, three former patients of psychomotor therapy have been interviewed. The search terms used included 'psychomotor therapy', 'writing in therapy', 'diaries' and 'transfer'. All terms were used in Dutch and English. The bibliographies of the selected articles were also screened.
RESULTS To use writing in therapy sessions results in a provable improvement of a patient's physical and psychological health. Furthermore, therapeutic writing has several other benefits for the patient's perceived autonomy. In their interviews, all three former patients declared to expect positive results when they keep a personal diary of their therapy sessions from the NAD.
CONCLUSION Keeping a personal diary to write about the therapy sessions could benefit the psychomotor therapy treatment of patients from the NAD. Theories about transference in therapy as well as several studies concerning therapeutic writing have confirmed the link between the effects of therapeutic writing and its influence on the transfer. This is supported by the former patients in their interviews.
