Samenvatting

This research explores and defines the problem Stichting Mira Media has concerning the
participation of Turkish migrants in media projects which are taking place in Utrecht, the
Netherlands. The main problem for the client is that there is very little representation of
Turkish migrants in the current media projects which are run by Mira Media and project
partners in the project ‘Digitale Leerplekken Basisvaardigheden’. This means: digital learning
facilities for basic skills. These basic skills are Dutch language and computer skills. The
objective for this research is to identify the problem why there are so little Turkish people
taking part in the projects. Moreover, a solution to the problem will be presented to the client
and partners in the final chapter of this report, in the form of a strategic advice.
The client, Stichting Mira Media is located in Utrecht, a city in the centre of the Netherlands.
Stichting Mira Media is a non-profit focused on using media to encourage integration in the
Dutch society. The report starts with exploring the project context as well as the
organisational context
This report discusses several theories and concepts regarding cultural background, motivation,
language proficiency and digital skills of Turkish migrants. Also, a comparison has been
made between the Turkish and the Moroccan migrants, since the Moroccans are very well
represented in the current media projects. This research is a case study on the Turkish
community in Utrecht.
The empirical research question of this research project is: ‘Why do the Turkish migrants in
Utrecht participate minimally in Dutch projects?’ The data in order to answer this question
will be taken from the interviews with expects and key-figures and the participant
observation.
Then, the analytical research question of this project is: “How can the project partners
promote the project ‘Digitale Leerplekken Basisvaardigheden’ to Turkish migrants in
Utrecht?” This question will be answered by comparing theories with the answers from the
empirical research question.
