Samenvatting

This report is a thesis made during graduation period at ENGIE Services West Industrie in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. This thesis has been realized over a course of 17 weeks in the department of Industrial Automation.

The problem, for which a solution has been created, is related to the process of design and realization of new projects. As it is, this process takes up a lot of time. The cause for this is that almost every time the IA department takes up a new job, all the hardware and programming choices have to be made again. This is a very time consuming and inefficient process. Another drawback is that other engineers often don’t understand the code of their colleagues.
A solution to this problem is to create our own control system consisting of standard hardware and control modules. We named this control system: ENGIE Control System (ECS). During the graduation period the focus lies on selecting hardware and design and creation of the following control modules:
- Analog input;
- Digital input/output;
- DOL Motor;
- Open/Close Valve;
- Control Output;
- Frequency Motor;
- PID controller.

The first step toward realizing the ECS has been to conduct research into the subjects of hardware selection and the different control modules. From this the S7-1500 line and Comfort Panel line from Siemens was selected as the PLC and HMI, on which the ECS was built. The requirements of the control modules were also drafted from conducting research and by consulting colleagues.
The requirements have been prioritized using three colors:
- Red: Highest priority, these requirements must be met.
- Orange: Medium priority, less important but still one of the clients wishes.
- Green: Low Priority, bonus functionality of inessential importance.

After the user requirements had been established, the functional and design specifications were created. The functional design describes the functionality offered by the control modules and explains this in detail. The technical design specification describes how the control modules are going to be realized technically.
The next step was the actual realization (programming and drawing) of the control modules. Every control module was first tested and approved before continuing with the next control module.

In addition to the control modules the following items have been created as part of the ENGIE Control System:
- Standard HMI Layout with 16 process screens, Trend and alarm view;
- Built-in security for the faceplates (who is allowed to control them);
- Pre-defined user groups;
- Guidelines/rules for engineers on how to use the ECS;
- Library with control modules, faceplates and icons.

Thanks to the creation of the ECS a lot of time can be saved during the design and construction of a project. Because of this, ENGIE is going to become a cheaper, and thus, a more attractive solution to their clients.
