Voorgeschiedenis

Summary

Background
Patient education is becoming an important aspect of health care. Patient education increases knowledge and accelerates the rehabilitation process. Nowadays a lot of hospitals are improving their patient education, the Maria Ziekenhuis Noord-Limburg (MZNL) in Overpelt is also improving this.
With the current practice, physiotherapists and doctors are giving education individually without any guidance of a protocol. This is why it is not clear which information is given and patients are hindered in their rehabilitation process.

Objective
The hospital's point of view is that patient education has a positive influence on the rehabilitation process and that's why they were interested in an education protocol. The primary goal is to determine the content of the education for people who are having total knee surgery in the MZNL. The education project consists of a PowerPoint presentation, completed with a guideline, brochure and research protocol for further research.

Method
With the help of a number of keywords, several databases like Cinahl, Pubmed, Medline and the Fontys Mediatheek, have been consulted for literature about this subject. The articles and books that were found have been assessed on relevance using inclusion and exclusion criteria. The articles were also assessed on methodological quality, using several data-avulsion forms.
Beside the literature search, information has been gathered from orthopedists, physiotherapists and patients. This has been done with the help of interviews and questionnaires.
Research has also been done to investigate the psychological factors of patients before and after the education conference. This has been done with the help of a questionnaire, named 'Doen en blijven doen: de persoonsgebonden factoren vragenlijst'. These results have been processed with the data-processing software SPSS 12.0.

Results
Research showed how patient education takes place at this moment at the MZNL and what kind of changes orthopedists, physiotherapists and patients would like to be included in the patient education.
The subjects which were chosen for the patient education for patients who are having a total knee surgery in the MZNL are: anatomy, surgery, rehabilitation and living with total knee.
In this investigation it has become clear how a total knee surgery is performed, what the rehabilitation within the MZNL looks like and what the post clinical phase looks like. The results also presented which adjustments should be made at home before the patient leaves the hospital.
Literature showed the value of patient education and how the education should be presented, for example the layout of a presentation, PowerPoint and brochure.

Conclusion
It is clear that the proper patient education had a positive influence on therapy compliance and adherence and psychological factors. It is also important that the education has the right contents. The proper subjects to include in this patient education project are information about the knee, the surgery, anesthetics, the ward, day of the surgery, rehabilitation, treatment of pain, the post clinical phase and practical tips. The patient education is most effective when the 'stappenreeks van voorlichting' is implemented in the patient education.

The report can be useful to gain an understanding of developing a patient education project for patients who are having total knee surgery.
