Samenvatting

Vegetables, like fruits, are low in calories and fats but contain good amounts of vitamins and minerals. Apart from the nutritional values and health benefits, some vegetables are used in traditional and orthodox medicines. Vegetable and fruit consumption helps reduce micronutrient deficiency and prevent hidden hunger amongst those at risk of micronutrient deficiency. Vegetables are widely eaten among different groups of people and different cultures. It was revealed through the study that the preference of some consumers of indigenous vegetables was rooted in the food habits as in culture, the nutritional and medicinal benefits of these vegetables. It is therefore concluded that socio-cultural perceptions of consumers have led to the extinction of some of the indigenous vegetables causing them to be forgotten.
