Samenvatting

QUOTES “The aim [of my research] is to find out how circular design is possible within the development phase [of a garment] in order to eliminate waste.” “The design strategy [designers] choose depends on the type of product. This can either be products that last or products that flow.” “Products that flow are fast-moving consumer goods where end of life products are a resource for new ones or where they are rendered harmless. Their use is relatively limited in time. Once flowing products have achieved their aim they quickly drop in value. Such as throw-away lighters but also commercial fashion products. This doesn’t imply an immediate end to their existence after they have done their job. They can still require effort through transportation or processing (which defines flow), to either help them disappear or to return them to a certain level of usefulness. Some products don’t exclusively ‘last’ and others strictly ‘flow’. As a matter of fact, almost all products flow to some extent. Sooner or later they are being discarded and demolished or recycled.” “Circular design requires rethinking the way products are produced, but also the system that they are a part of. The relation between products and systems represents a challenge for circular design.” RESEARCH QUESTION To what extent is circular economy possible within the product development phase of clothing? SUB QUESTIONS 1. What are the principles and characteristics of circular economy and how does this relate to the development phase? 2. What are the opportunities, challenges and risks of circular principles within the development phase of the product lifecycle? 3. What are designers currently doing related to circular design? CIRCULAR DESIGN GUIDE The final product will result in a guide with tools and advises that designers and developers need when developing a circular collection.
